  • will grow on a range of soil PH and textures
  • can tolerate mild waterlogging and mild salinity
  • days to flowering 95 to 100 days

Description

  • Prima Gland Clover has hairless, waxy leaflets that are rounded in the rosette stage and become elongated as stems develop.
  • The stems are slender and can reach 30 to 40cm in height when ungrazed.
  • The flowers are a distinctive light to dark pink colour and form into a globular head
  • Flowering generally begins in mid September

Insect Tolerance

Prima Gland Clover has a high level of tolerance to red-legged earthmites and moderate tolerance to aphids. You find that Prima Gland Clover is not susceptible to clover scorch

Area of Use

Prima Gland Clover is ideal for including in pasture mixes to provide a backup pasture legume in situations of false break and heavy red-legged earthmite populations. The hardseed level and breakdown of Prima Gland Clover will suit pasture rotations or longer term permanent pastures or between continuing cropping sequences. Prima will be very useful as an annual legume ley crop in vineyards, strong late winter growth, excellent purple colour from mid September. Mow or rotaryhoe under mid October.

Establishment

Prima Gland Clover seed requires scarification before sowing to increase its germination percentage. The use of unscarified seed will result in poor establishment. Sowing rate for seed production should be between 5 to 7kg/ha. The small seed size requires a shallow sowing depth (max 1cm) and establishment will benefit from rolling after sowing.

Production and Marketing

is produced and marketed under a contract system. Propagation of seed for sale can only be carried out by a licencee.

Origin

Prima Gland Clover was developed from an ecotype collected by J,S. Katznelson in 1976 in the Yehudiyya Forest, Golan, Israel. It was selected for evaluation in a Grains Research and Development Corporation funded project in 1994. It has been national field evaluation by the National Annual Pasture Improvement Programme in Western Australia since 1997. Imported into New Zealand under licence by Kiwi Seed Co (Marlborough) Limited in 2008.
